Adaptogens: Herbs for Strength, Stamina, and Stress Relief

An example would be giving saw palmetto, nettle root, and white sage for prostate enlargement. Each has a different mechanism of action, and the three herbs combined are vastly more effective than any one alone. 5. For teas, add herbs to improve the flavor. The best formula is useless if a person refuses to take it because of its unpleasant taste. 6. Mucilaginous herbs should be used only in teas. Herbs with high levels of sticky resins should be taken as tinctures or in pill form.

According to European research, extracts of this herb can do double duty to relieve allergy symptoms and help improve urine flow in men with benign prostate enlargement. Side effects are uncommon. • • • Now that the value of saw palmetto has been called into question for treating benign prostate enlargement (BPH),42 some men may want to consider stinging nettle instead. Urtica dioica has been used to treat BPH in Europe for decades. There are good reasons why this herb might be effective.

Symptoms of prostate enlargement can include frequent urination, especially during the night; pelvic pain; burning; impotence; and difficulty starting and stopping urination. Problems urinating can lead to urine remaining and becoming stagnant in the bladder, causing infection of the bladder and the kidneys. See also bladder infection and kidney stress. Symptoms of prostatitis include fever, frequent urination accompanied by a burning sensation, blood or pus in the urine, urinary tract infection, and pain between the scrotum and the rectum.

Zinc deficiency may be a contributing factor in the high rate of prostate enlargement in this country. It is estimated that 50 to 60 percent of the men between the ages of 40 and 59 have prostate enlargement. Zinc supplementation has been shown to reduce the size of the prostate in the majority of the patients. The importance of zinc in normal skin function is well known. Typically, serum zinc levels are lower in 13-to-14-year-old males than in any other age group. This group is also the most susceptible to acne.

The actual cause of prostate enlargement is unknown. Aside from some link to aging, the testicles may play a role in the growth of the prostate gland. Men who have had their testicles removed at a young age because of testicular cancer or another medical reason do not develop BPH, probably as a result of the ensuing lack of dihydrotestosterone, which has a stimulatory effect on prostate tissue. Similarly, if after developing BPH a man has his testicles removed, the prostate begins to shrink.

Many of my clients who stopped drinking any kind of alcohol, including beer and wine, spontaneously recovered from such problems as panic attacks, arrhythmia, respiratory problems, various heart conditions, sleeping disorders, gallbladder attacks, pancreatic infections, prostate enlargement, colitis, and other inflammatory diseases. If you suffer from any disease at all, it is best to stay away from all dehydrating beverages, such as alcohol, coffee, tea, and soda (especially diet drinks).

There are better ways to prevent prostate enlargement. In a study published in a recent issue of the British Journal of Urology International, researchers from the University of Chicago reviewed the results of nearly 20 trials that tested Permixon, a commercial extract of saw palmetto. The results were overwhelmingly positive, including improved urine flow; reduction of urinary urgency and pain; improved emptying of the bladder; reduction in size of the prostate gland after two years; and significant improvement in quality of life.

Likewise, a similar immune response in the ovaries can cause ovarian cysts; in the prostate gland, it may lead to prostate enlargement. In some instances, the reaction may trigger anaphylactic shock, nausea, skin rashes, breathing difficulties, fainting, diarrhea, and death. There may be many more diseases linked to allergic reactions than are currently known. Research in the field of Radionics has shown that there are four main allergies, which cover most other possible allergies. These take account of the body's reactions to duck feathers, milk, wheat, and mint.

A continuous restriction of lymph drainage from the male pelvic area causes benign and malignant prostate enlargement as well as inflammation of the testes, penis, and urethra. Impotence is a likely consequence of this development. The consistent increase of gallstones in the liver, a common factor among middle-aged men in affluent societies, is one of the major reasons for lymph blockage in this vital part of the body. Venereal diseases occur when the exposed parts of the body reach a high level of toxicity. Microbial infection is preceded by major lymph congestion.

Saw Plametto has been historically used as a treatment for prostate enlargement and chronic cystitis as well as a mild diuretic. Antiandrogenic Effects The lipophilic extract of the herb inhibits binding of dihydro-testosterone (DHT) to the cytosolic androgenic receptor and alpha 1-adrenoceptor in the prostate, thus preventing accumulation of the steroid, which may lead to prostate hyperplasia (Carilla, 1984; Goepel, 1999). Antiandrogenic effects of the lipophilic extract also consist of 5-alpha-reductase and 3-ketosteroid reductase inhibition.

Almost half of all men over forty-five suffer from at least some degree of prostate enlargement. At first, an enlarged prostate produces no symptoms, but as it grows and puts increased pressure on the urethra, urinary problems develop. It may be difficult to start urinating, and once the flow has begun, it may be hard to stop. There may be dribbling in-between urination, along with a sense that the bladder isn't completely empty. Many men find that they awaken several times a night to urinate.
In recent years, there has been growing evidence that estrogen plays a role in prostate enlargement. A man's body contains the hormone estrogen, albeit in lesser amounts than in women. Some research shows that the balance between estrogen, testosterone, and DHT is the main issue with prostate cell growth. It is interesting to note that the enzyme aromatase converts testosterone to a potent form of estrogen known as estradiol. Estradiol causes prostate cells to grow and multiply. Keep in mind that pesticides, herbicides, and other environmental pollutants mimic estrogen in the body.
It makes some sense that DHT may not be the major villain in prostate enlargement. Rather, it is the balance between estrogen, testosterone, and DHT—and, likely, even progesterone—that really matters. The point is that proper hormone balance through diet, exercise, nutritional supplements, and detoxification is the key to helping this condition. Prostatic enlargement responds well to natural treatment. Dietary and herbal therapies are especially effective at reducing the swelling and balancing the hormones.

Alpha-reductase inhibition represents a potentially effective therapeutic approach to benign prostate enlargement (page 58) and male pattern baldness. Isoflavones may reduce the risk of hormone-dependent cancers, such as breast (page 65) and prostate cancer (page 371), as well as other cancers. One study of soy research found that 65% of 26 animal-based cancer studies showed a protective effect of soy or soy isoflavones.4 Human research also suggests a protective role of soy against cancer,5'6 but the data are currently insufficient to form any solid conclusions.
Hormones with anabolic effects on muscle often have side effects that include acne (page 4), male-pattern baldness, prostate enlargement, and lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL; "good") cholesterol (page 223). Whether methoxyisoflavone can cause these side effects has not been investigated. METHYLSULFONYLMETHANE What is it? Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring, organic, sulfur (page 590)-containing compound related to another sulfur-containing substance, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO [page 508]).

Finasteride works by preventing the buildup of dihydrotestosterone, a breakdown product of testosterone that is thought to promote prostate enlargement. Although a 4-year study did show that finasteride improves urinary symptoms and reduces the need for surgery, this drug is not without side effects. Approximately 5% of men who take finasteride develop impotence or other types of sexual dysfunction, and about 4 of every 1,000 men experience breast enlargement} The blood pressure-lowering drug terazosin (Hytrin), is also frequently prescribed for BPH.
Physicians who subscribe to the latter theory point out that men in their twenties (a time when testosterone levels are highest) have virtually no prostate enlargement or prostate cancer, whereas older men (who often have significantly lower levels of this hormone) commonly experience these problems. There is insufficient research to determine which (if either) theory is correct.
